May the Force be with You…

I promise this is not a spoiler alert. I will not even dare try to make some overly-analytical critique or connection to the new movie for fear that I might give away anything to those who are geek-ing out for the real Star Wars premiere tomorrow. I’ll just say this…I liked the female roles and there are some hysterical one-liners. Well done JJ.

The reason I’m writing about this tonight though, other than the fact that I had to ingest liters of caffeine to get off the actual cancer couch during chemo week to join the proud ranks of such uber-geeks as my husband, into the movie theater for the pre-premiere premiere, and will likely be up for hours now -is that there was one line in the film that reminded me of this experience I’m having with cancer.

Once we got through 5, yes 5, false starts due to technical difficulties in the theater. At a Star Wars Pre-Premiere. Please tell me I’m not a horrible human being for deriving some twisted pleasure from the sheer and blissful irony of watching the maximum occupancy of 180 completely spazzed-out Star Wars fans have to squirm and suffer through “technical difficulties.” That’s some kind of real-life oxymoron right there. I’ve no doubt any one of these geniuses could have gone up, re-assembled a new projector, and fixed it themselves in the time we waited if they hadn’t been so paralyzed with horror at the delay. So, yes the recalcitrant (and much less intelligent) geek that I am thought this was hysterical. But once the head techie fixed the issue and it was on with the show…one line from Maz (dare I say a female Yoda character?) to Rey (female Luke) struck me.

She said something like, close your eyes, feel the force, the light is all around you, its always been there. I’m sure I just massacred that, so devoted fans, please don’t send hate mail. I know how passionate true Star Wars fans are about your direct movie quotes (I live with one). But, it reminded me of this shift in perspective that I’ve had recently, seeing light and humor in almost all situations, where I may not have been tuned in enough to notice before. I had to smile at how universal our experiences really are as “humans” – even a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. May the force be with you…close your eyes, see the light:)and yes enjoy the movie…its really good.

  1. Princess Leah,

As I mentioned in one of my first communications with you, very good things come out of a suckfest like cancer. One of the best is how your eyes open so wide and your senses begin to sense the blessings in your life like never before. A very solid sterling silver lining to a dark cloud. One of true meaning and value. Take care.

  2. The Star Wars geek in my life is my son Gregory. I look forward to seeing the movie tonight with him and my husband. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m sure I will as well. And Greg will be quoting the movie to me until the 8th one comes out.

  3. Ah, young Jedi. Haven’t you figured out yet what the rest of us already know? You are the force. The rest of us just get to bask in your glow. Love you!
